Instructional Innovation Strategies to Develop Critical Thinking Skills of Muhammadiyah Elementary School Students

This study investigates the instructional innovation strategies applied by Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers at Muhammadiyah Perumnas Elementary School to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on classroom practices, teacher-student interactions, and the integration of Islamic values in the learning process. The findings indicate that varied strategies such as communicative delivery, open-ended discussions, reflective activities, and contextual applications significantly improve students’ analytical, ethical, and spiritual reasoning. These innovations are supported by curriculum design, teacher preparedness, and the school’s Islamic culture, though challenges such as time constraints and varying student abilities remain. The study concludes that instructional innovation rooted in Islamic values plays a strategic role in nurturing holistic critical thinking skills from an early age, providing insights for teacher training and curriculum development in Muhammadiyah elementary education.
