This study explores the complementation of character education within the framework of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at SMP Citra Mulia Makassar. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research investigates how character values are embedded through pedagogical practices, teacher modeling, curriculum integration, and cultural contextualization. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving teachers, students, school leaders, and parents.
Findings reveal that character education is systematically implemented through strategies such as teacher exemplarity (uswah hasanah), contextual learning, habituation routines, and integration of local cultural values (e.g., sipakatau and siri’ na pacce) with Islamic ethics. The use of digital tools—though still in development—shows potential for expanding the moral reach of IRE beyond the classroom. The study also highlights significant challenges, including limited parental involvement, insufficient monitoring outside school, and the need for specialized teacher training. However, strong institutional support, committed educators, and a spiritually rich school climate contribute to the program’s effectiveness.
This research contributes to the discourse on moral and religious education by presenting a holistic, culturally grounded, and context-responsive model for character formation. It emphasizes that complementation in character education is not an isolated initiative but a collaborative, value-based system that is deeply interwoven with the educational mission of Islamic schooling.
